Court Puts Hold on Qualcomm Import Ban

A federal judge Wednesday halted an import ban on mobile phones by Qualcomm Inc., a rare legal victory in a long-standing patent dispute with rival Broadcom Corp.Judge Haldane Mayer on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted a request by several mobile phone manufacturers and AT&T Inc.'s wireless division to stay the ban the federal government ordered in June. The U.S. International Trade Commission barred imports of new mobile phone models with Qualcomm chips after determining that the company had violated a patent held by chip-maker Broadcom on battery power-saving technology. Review: Rival Phones No Match for iPhone

"Hey, let's give it two top menus! Give the user more choice" The iPhone makes me mad. Not, mind you, at the iPhone itself, but mad at cell-phone manufacturers who have saddled us for years with interfaces that lure us into labyrinths of menus. The buttons that are supposed to guide us through this maze do different things on every screen: a single button can mean 'Back' on one screen, 'Cancel' on another, 'Exit' on a third. The iPhone has one button on its face. It always does the same thing: takes you to the top menu, where icons representing all functions of the phone _ music player, Internet browser and more _ are laid out in a clear manner. Wham, you're out of the labyrinth. Read more - Original Story

Reviewer: iPhone Almost Lives Up To Hype

"It has a wide screen, larger that any other iPod. One of the iPhone's features that the regular iPod doesn't have is that you can flip through the cover of the albums that you have in your library." The iPhone doesn't go on sale until Friday evening but, thanks to Apple's full-court press advertising and media campaign, some people are already standing in line to get one. Is the iPhone worthy of the buildup? Ed Baig, personal technology columnist for USA Today, has tried one, and offered his thoughts on its pros and cons on The Early Show Wednesday. Basically, says Baig, it's very good, but not perfect. Its hype though, he told co-anchor Hannah Storm, is "remarkable. I've been covering tech for more years than I can remember, and this product has had such a mania and attraction that I've never seen it with any other product." Read more - Original Story
